The federal government is moving toward the most sweeping overhaul of college financial aid in decades. The House of Representatives voted for the measure as part of its passage of health care legislation Sunday.Under the proposal, private lenders would no longer make federally subsidized student loans. Instead, the government would make all such loans itself, instead of only some as it does now.Eliminating the middleman would save the government an estimated $61 billion over the next decade....

Two weeks ago Congress passed, and President Barack Obama subsequently signed into law, a bill designed to overhaul the health insurance industry. Most of the coverage of this law has focused on the politics of the passing; some have dealt with real world impacts; almost none have focused on the specific impacts to college students. Beyond politics, this law will directly impact college students. Major changesIn 2014, insurance companies will no longer use health status to determine insurance...

Given the current economic climate, many seniors are nervous about their post-graduation plans. However, according to Denny Ciganovic, C of C’s Career Center director, with the right guidance and some flexibility finding that first job is not impossible. “It’s still a weak market, but it is starting to improve. If you’re not restricting yourself to a certain geographic area, the bigger markets have more opportunities,” Ciganovic said. For most graduating seniors the search for a job began long...

Dittmer led the audience in a discussion and sold signed copies of his book. To begin the meeting, Dittmer gave a brief background of the struggle for social equality in health care during the civil rights movement. In his...

To the average C of C student, the prospect of contracting a sexually transmitted disease or encountering a pregnancy seems improbable in the alcohol-induced haze some call the weekend. However, students walk a thin line when engaging in unprotected sexual activities.Jane Reno-Munro, director of Student Health Services, said that Student Health Services does not keep records of STD cases but chlamydia is the most commonly diagnosed disease.A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study says...

South Carolina political scandals cause student debate

Politics in South Carolina have been seen in a negative light lately. With actions and remarks made by Governor Mark Sanford, Representative Joe Wilson and Lieutenant Governor Andre Bauer covering the headlines all over the country, South Carolina students are speaking out.
While many students willingly gave their opinions, for the purposes of the article they would like to remain anonymous.
A senior at the College and Maryland native said that she has seen a lot of disagreement between...

Governor Sanford’s budget proposal may affect C of C

S.C. Gov. Mark Sanford started his final year in office by announcing a new budget plan that will have statewide effects. Money will be cut from health care programs, worker pay and college programs.
It is unclear how C of C will be affected by the 2010 budget, but thanks to a conservative fiscal policy and institutional reserves, the College is prepared to make the necessary changes to maintain the same educational experience.
In 2009, C of C was hit with two state budget...

The Sprout Organic Café Does it One Sprout Burger at a Time

Most people don't really think about what they're eating or where it came from. Even though we all know that double bacon cheeseburger is bad for us, we eat it because it's convenient, not stopping to consider how it clogs our arteries and contributes to the depletion of the ozone layer. Luckily, there is an accessible alternative in the vegan, organic, raw and sustainable options of the recently opened Sprout Café. Accessible through the doors of Seeking Indigo on 445 King or around the...

The recent war of words between the White House and FOX News is troubling and every American should be alarmed by it. White House Communications Director Anita Dunn, White House Senior Advisor David Axelrod and White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel have branded FOX News as an illegitimate news source. It seems that they do not think that the American people need a news network that takes a fair look at events, giving credit when it is due, but asking tough...

By simply typing “health” into the now ever-convenient World Wide Web, one will instantly see news, advertising and tons of medical information on various sites. One such site, known as WebMD, will even give you a basic diagnosis of your symptoms and general health tips such as how to avoid a cold.
Fifty years ago health concerns weren’t a number one priority for people in America. In today’s world, however, we have commercials about the Butterton’s telling...

This year the C of C College Republicans are fighting to bring everyone together through bipartisanship on campus.
President Katie Moske and Vice President Austin Ruedrich are striving to gain more members and achieve a number of goals for this year.
