Our Take

One of the great things that comes with being a student at C of C is the opportunity to learn more about almost any subject conceivable.  Whether it is in the classroom or just from life experience, few will argue that one’s time in college is not a constant learning experience.  A great way to broaden one’s horizons is to attend one of the many lectures at the College given by faculty as well as guest speakers.
On Feb. 10 I attended “Talks on Tap” at the Southend Brewery.  The topic of the talk was whether evolution was consistent with the teachings in the Bible, or if the concept of evolution is a heresy, as many Christians have claimed.  While I will leave each person to come to their own conclusion, I will say that although I do not hold a firm stance on the issue, it was entertaining and informative to listen to two Protestants duke it out.  Each laid out his argument clearly, usually referring to the Bible to justify his position but there were a few zingers from each.  This debate may not be the ideal event for all students, but it is only one of the countless events offered by the College.
Another event that is being held on campus is a lecture on Feb. 19 at 6 p.m. in Physicians Auditorium, which is sponsored by the Italian Club.  The guest speaker, Mirella Tenderini, is the author of “The Duke of Abruzzi: An Explorer’s Life,” and will give an account of the Duke of Abruzzi, who explored the Arctic in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.  There will be free Italian food, Italian luxury cars on display and probably a lot of Italians present.  When people think of Italy, most likely the first thing to come to mind is Florence, Rome or Venice, not an Italian prince who explored the Arctic.  Everyone may not be interested in attending this event, but the worst that can happen from attending is walking out with a full stomach and a few fun facts.
Every student at C of C should take full advantage of the many events and lectures that are available on campus.  After graduation most people will transition into a job and no longer have the opportunities that are available to every student at the College.  Make a date out of it or drag your unwilling roommate with you.  Either way make it to some of the events on campus.
