C of C men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams each suffered defeats to Old Dominion (1-0) as the men (0-1) fell 184-94 and the women (1-1) dropped a 185-106 decision Saturday afternoon in Norfolk, Va.
Senior Randy Buchanan and sophomore Matt Sherrier led the way for the men’s program with a first-place finish and a pair of runner-up performances apiece and each helped the Cougars’ 400-yard medley relay team to a second place finish with a time of 3:36.05. Seniors Greg Greer and Sam Winkler formed the other two legs of the squad.
Buchanan netted top individual honors in the 200-yard individual medley (1:56.86) and second-place finishes in the 50-yard freestyle (21.45) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:11.08) while Sherrier took first in the 500-yard freestyle (4:44.56) and second in the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:58.62) and 100-yard freestyle (47.95).
Greer added a pair of second-place outings in the 100-yard butterfly (53.37) and 200-yard individual medley (2:05.63) while freshman Peter Gibbons notched top honors in the one-meter dive with 231.50 points and second-place in the three-meter dive with a mark of 221.75.
For the women, freshman Grace Herlong earned three runner-up finishes with times of 59.81 in the 100-yard butterfly, 2:11.85 in the 200-yard butterfly and 10:43.17 in the 1,000-yard freestyle. She was joined by junior Sara Gardocki who notched a first-place finish in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:38.95) and two third-place performances in the 200-yard freestyle (2:01.40) and 500-yard freestyle (5:20.65).
Freshman Casy Sweeney headlined a sweep of the 200-yard individual medley at 2:13.74, pairing with fellow freshman Jacqueline Tully and junior April Coyne with times of 2:18.59 and 2:19.03.
The Cougars are back in action Friday, Oct. 23 when the women host North Carolina A&T and Campbell at the Stern Center in Charleston, S.C. Start time is slated for 2 p.m. for that meet while the men will next be in action on October 31 vs. Davidson at the Stern Center with a 2 p.m. start.
