Statue to honor SGA president

Mike Hunt

This article was published in the George Street Observer's April 1st edition. In case you didn't notice, it is an April Fools Joke. This story is entirely fictitious. We hope that you enjoyed it.

A proposal to be unveiled Thursday will forever immortalize SGA President John Capelle on the C of C campus. Capelle’s effigy will be carved in marble and displayed on a pedestal on Rivers Green.

The proposed monument would be completed before the end of the semester with funding from the College’s Discretionary Self-Aggrandizement Fund. The fund was established in 2008 by then SGA President Seaton Brown for projects such as this.

The monument is one of Capelle’s many initiatives to transform C of C into the “Harvard of the South.” Capelle hopes the monument will improve the look and feel of the campus.

Capelle’s proposal also adheres to the College’s larger strategic plan. The strategic plan says it is “essential that the College community establish a stronger sense of pride and purpose,” something Capelle says the statue accomplishes with great flourish.

The Rivers Green location behind the Addlestone Library is special for Capelle. One of his biggest accomplishments as president has been getting a slip n’ slide on the green.

A Charleston artist specializing in sculpting will create the monument. The final design has not been completed, as Capelle wants to make sure the resemblance is uncanny.

In addition to serving as a campus landmark, Capelle said, the statue will be a great way to recognize his many accomplishments this year.

Capelle isn’t worried about the grandiosity of the proposal. He says the student body will greet the statue as a manifestation of the College’s new direction.

Capelle did not respond to the Observer’s request for an interview.

I think this would really make the college grow!

Self-Aggrandizement Fund established by Seaton Brown. haha! Pretty good 4/1 article. I hope John and Seaton find it as funny as I do.

I am disgusted, nay outraged by this repugnant use of the school's funds! While the weak go hungry, the powerful erect statues in their honor, eh Cappelle?

THE SYSTEM IS BROKEN! REVOLT IN THE SYSTEM! GET FRESH!

This is all part of that damned FIJI conspiracy to take over the school!! WHAT NEXT!?!?!

haha, calm down anonymous #2, this is April Fools Day.
