College announces Sept. 22 Jason Mraz concert

Popular musician Jason Mraz to perform at CofC's Carolina First Arena

In an email to the student body Friday morning, the College of Charleston's Office of Student Life announced a concert from top-40 musician Jason Mraz. cisternyard.com first broke the story late Thursday on Twitter.

The 8 p.m. concert will be held Sept. 22 at Carolina First Arena and is open to the public. The concert comes days after the popular musician performs at Chicago's Wrigley Field.

A pre-sale for CofC students begins August  23 at the Arena box office. Student tickets are $20 if purchased in advance. Day of show tickets are $25. Tickets for the public will go on sale August 28. All seating for the show is general admission.

The College's investment in the concert is unknown at this time. As of Friday morning. the stop in Charleston had not been added to the musician's website.

I'd like a little more information on this topic. An anonymous source of mine says that the College has paid over $150,000 for Jason Mraz to perform at the Carolina First Arena. Amid tuition increases and budget decreases across the board, I'm wondering if this figure is accurate, where the money came from, and will the College earn a percentage of revenues for seats sold.

I think it's very exciting for a popular artist to come down South, but do we really need to pay so much for one night of fun at the expense of student organizations and academic departments?
