DJ Tantrum, Fallen Kings, Gas Light Street and Plainfield Project headlined C of C’s Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) third annual Rockstock fundraising music festival April 15 at the Music Farm.
The event promoted the local nonprofit organization Carolina Studios, an after-school program designed for children to develop musical skills.
The music started at 8 p.m. with DJ Tantrum, followed by the opening of Fallen Kings. After Fallen Kings, the co-founder of Carolina Studios, Hootie and the Blowfish lead guitarist Mark Bryan, made a guest appearance to show his appreciation for the event. Gas Light Street and Plainfield Project followed.
DJ Tantrum and the bands all donated their time to help promote Carolina Studios. Tantrum has appeared as a co-host on BET’s Rap City and has received national and international recognition. Fallen Kings, a rock band, traveled to Charleston from Columbia, S.C. to showcase their talent as well as promote Carolina Studios.
Gas Light Street, a local funk and blues band, rocked out on Thursday as they played songs from their album, “Blue Skies for Fools.” The last band, Plainfield Project, brought their rock, reggae and funk talents while playing funky, playful tunes.
In its third year, Rockstock continues to promote local bands and nonprofit organizations.
Vice President of PRSSA Toni Everly described how PRSSA picks a nonprofit organization.
“PRSSA chooses which nonprofit organization to fundraise [for] through a drawing. Carolina Studios happened to be the lucky one,” said Everly.
Carolina Studios was established in 2001 to provide a safe environment for school-aged children in the Charleston community.
Carolina Studios offers programs to develop skills in music and computer technologies as a way to teach children how to use their time productively. During the event, Bryan gave his appreciation for Rockstock.
“I am happy and fortunate to be a part of Rockstock this year. Thank you all who donated to Carolina Studios,” said Bryan.
Look out for next year’s Rockstock event in April 2011.
