At the Sept. 29 meeting, the State Budget and Control Board approved the College’s proposal to convert the Hungry Cougar to an all-you-can-eat dining facility.
The vote was the last in an eight step process to approve the $1.9 million project, funded by profits from dining services operations over the last five years. Despite the approval, the project will remain on hold due to the Board’s moratorium on capital projects.
The College planned to convert Hungry Cougar after evaluating the location’s traffic.
“89 percent of the traffic in the Hungry Cougar is meal-equivalency,” Jan Brewton, the College’s Director of Business and Auxiliary Services, said. “What would work best, we believe, is a residential dining option similar to what we have at the Fresh Food Company.”
The project will also create a dedicated sandwich shop in the Cougar Card Services office, which would move to the old C-Store in Berry Hall.
“The deli-portion of the Hungry Cougar is very popular,” Brewton said, not wanting to alienate retail customers.
The project would expand the size of the Hungry Cougar to 7,260 square feet, up from 5,640, by closing off the breezeway under Berry.
The project would also replace existing furniture, mechanical ductwork, equipment, and lighting, which would be energy efficient to promote sustainable conservation.
In light of the moratorium, it is unknown when the College would be able to continue its plans for the Hungry Cougar.

I completely agree with the above comment. The Hungry Cougar's menu is much less apetizing than the menu at Liberty, HOWEVER, I choose the Hungry Cougar because I can get the food there to go & take it to my room. If the Hungry Cougar ever stops offering "to go" meals then i will have to resort to easy mac & ramen noodles in my room. i don't care how close the new facility would be to my room & i don't care how good the new buffet food might taste, if i have to eat it there i won't eat it at all. so i definitely would NOT be buying a meal plan if that is ever the case.
some people don't like eating in front of other people. & some people don't have time to sit down & eat at a location when they need to be in their room studying.
also, the few times i did eat at liberty were miserable because i'm an introvert & my friends don't go to CofC so therefore i could find nowhere to sit. finally i'd find a corner table to sit @ by myself, but usually i'd give up after 15 minutes & throw my food away & leave. also, people stare @ you when you're eating alone at liberty. it's very uncomfortable.
the only change that needs to occur at the hungry cougar is to make the tiny table between the pizza bar & salad bar bigger so it can offer more "home-style" foods because it runs out of food so fast it's ridiculous.
also, if you could make the staff there smile every so often & not make you feel like you should be apologizing to them for walking in & making them have to work.. that would be the best change of all.
The reason The Hungry Cougar is so popular is because people like the option of getting food and taking it elsewhere to eat. I know that's why I go. The amount of people who get their food there is much larger than the amount of people who actually eat in there. These changes are going to make it LESS popular, not more.
