Cougar Shuttle a success, now runs 7 days a week

On Feb. 2 Executive Vice President for Student Affairs Victor Wilson sent an e-mail to the student body announcing that the Cougar Shuttle will now be running seven nights a week.
The e-mail said that this is due to “a successful trial period this fall combined with a majority of positive comments from students.”
Isaiah Nelson, student body vice president, said the shuttle would continue because of support from the student body.
“The Cougar Shuttle was widely supported by students in the fall,” Nelson said. “We saw very high numbers of students ride the shuttle every weekend.”
The Clean Slate Committee came up with the idea for the Cougar Shuttle last summer. Associate Dean of Students Evie Nadel and a group of students served on the committee.
“We gave almost 4,000 students rides during our trial period in the fall semester,” Nadel said.
Nelson said the committee wanted to create a secure and trustworthy service for students.
“They wanted to provide a safe and reliable late-night service for students to get home and get out of possibly dangerous situations,” Nelson said.
The idea for the Cougar Shuttle also stemmed from student complaints about SafeRide, the College’s former shuttle service.
“It is no secret that the SafeRide program provided inconsistent service for the College of Charleston students,” Nelson said. “This service was not something we were willing to settle with because it did not provide a safe way for students to get home late at night.”
Due to the decision to run the Cougar Shuttle seven nights a week, SafeRide will no longer be available.
“It did not make sense to have two programs that were providing the same service, so the decision was made to continue the Cougar Shuttle, which was proving to be the best for the students,” Nelson said.
Freshman Shelby Semmes has been pleased with the Cougar Shuttle.
“I have the shuttle’s number in my phone in case I ever find myself in a situation where it would be helpful,” Semmes said. “I have used the Cougar Shuttle when I have felt unsafe walking far from campus.”
Other students also use the Cougar Shuttle and trust it as a reliable transportation service.
“I think Cougar Shuttle is a good idea because it keeps our student body safer at night,” said junior Emily Hoeksema.
Sophomore Chris Fabian also thinks the Shuttle is a great idea.
“Like myself, a lot of students at C of C don’t have cars. This can make getting around at night a pain,” Fabian said. “It’s really nice that this is available for us.”
The Cougar Shuttle is free for all students to use, said Nelson.
“Students will only have to show their College of Charleston ID to ride,” Nadel said. “We encourage students to ride the shuttle rather than walking alone during the hours of operation.”
The Cougar Shuttle runs from 11 p.m. until 3 a.m., seven days a week. The number is (888) 960-2227.
