College names new provost

Arizona State's George Hynd will join the College in January 2010

College of Charleston announced on Monday the newest addition to its executive team.

George W. Hynd will join the College on Jan. 11, 2010 as the next provost and executive vice president for academic affairs, according to an e-mail sent by President P. George Benson.

“The selection of George Hynd comes at a crucial period for the College.  With the Board of Trustees’ recent approval of our new Strategic Plan, we are about to begin the exciting and challenging work of executing the plan,” Benson said in the e-mail. “I am confident that George Hynd is exactly the right individual to lead our academic programs toward the plan’s envisioned future.”

Hynd visited the campus on Oct. 14 for an open forum for all faculty and students to listen to the then-potential provost speak. During the forum, Hynd highlighted the importance of a liberal arts education.

“When a diploma is received, there is a supplement attached and learning outcomes,” Hynd said. “Liberal arts schools produce more students who go to graduate school and obtain Ph.Ds.”

Hynd is currently finishing up his term as the senior provost director at Arizona State University.

Before he started at ASU, Hynd led the strategic planning process at Purdue University where he was also dean of the College of Education.
