Charleston cruises over Chattanooga in quarterfinals, 96-69

Cougars to face Mountaineers in conference semifinals on Sunday

It was a Saturday night shootout at the Bojangles’ Coliseum in Charlotte as the College of Charleston men’s basketball team rushed out to a 96-69 victory over Chattanooga.

The pro-Charleston crowd roared as Andrew Goudelock scored a game-high 27 points on 7-for-10 shooting from behind the arc.

It wasn’t just Goudelock though. Tony White Jr. continued to demolish the Mocs with his offense. White shot 50 percent on the night and finished with 22 points.

Although Charleston cruised to its first-ever postseason victory over Chattanooga, head coach Bobby Cremins’ main concern was UTC player Ty Patterson.

Patterson collapsed during a timeout with 11:14 left in the second half. The entire arena went quiet as emergency officials rushed the court to check on UTC’s leading scorer.

Both teams were taken to the locker rooms as officials worked on rehabilitating Patterson. Officials put him on a stretcher and an ambulance took him to Carolina Medical Center where his last known condition was stable.

“Obviously, our concern is about Ty Patterson. I have great respect for him. My prayers are with Ty Patterson,” said Cremins, whose team will advance to play Appalachian State in the conference semifinals on Sunday. “I don’t know him personally, but they kicked our butts last year and he was a big factor.”

Patterson led all Chattanooga scorers with 16 points tonight and he scored 12 points in Chattanooga’s 2009 conference championship game, a game that Charleston held close to its heart through this season.

“We just wanted to set the tone early. We knew what it took last year to get to the championship,” White said. “The fact that we fell short really stayed in our minds.”

The Cougars used the motivation to jump out to a 56-36 halftime lead thanks to 66 percent shooting from the 3-point range and 65 percent shooting overall.

After a tie at 2-2, Charleston took control on consecutive 3s by White, Goudelock and Donavan Monroe. From there, the team played with the same poise it had during its January seven-game win streak. It was also a return to Goudelock’s normal style.

“It was a big relief. I’ve been on a slump for five games,” said Goudelock, who also finished with six assists. “I think today was a lot more focused. Every time I shot the ball, I thought the ball was going in.”

Monroe finished with 15 points and Simmons just missed a double-double with 10 points and 9 rebounds for the Cougars. Casaan Breeden led the team with 12 rebounds.

Cremins said although the Cougars shot well tonight, the team still needs to find some consistency going into the upcoming game versus the Mountaineers.

Charleston won the last game against Appalachian State 73-72 at the Carolina First Arena on Feb. 17.

White echoed his coach’s feelings.

“We know that’s not going to happen every night. We gotta find other ways to win. Coming into the tournament there are going to be some low scoring games,” White said. “You gotta be very versatile in the tournament. You gotta have a counter. You gotta have a backup plan.”
