At long last, fans of Charleston garage rock acts Vanity Plates and Hot Showers are getting the greatest gift of all just in time for the holidays. The two bands have announced a joint project appropriately entitled Vanity Plates/Hot Showers Split Tape to be released on December 8, 2017. The tape will serve as the first studio recordings by either band, though both acts have garnered attention from their live shows in the past, including a recent appearance at The Royal American opening for Columbus, OH folk rock act Swarming Branch.
The announcement of the tape is accompanied by a Vanity Plates single entitled “WHYDIDUDIE,” keeping with the band’s theme of naming all of their songs after license plates that they have seen. “WHYDIDUDIE” sets a great tone for what listeners can expect from the tape with its dinged, vintage garage production. It is reverb laden and buzzed to the nth degree, making it not only a stellar single but giving it a ton of charm. It has a brassy lead guitar that cuts straight through the track and vocalist Brett Nash finds a fitting tone for a song so focused on death, with his voice bridging between a groan and a howl.
The Vanity Plates/Hot Showers Split Tape will be the second project released by Charleston music collective Makeout Reef in 2017, the first being Mr. Rosewater’s Who Is Mr. Rosewater? tape back in April.
The Vanity Plates/Hot Showers release is currently available for preorder on Bandcamp (via the hyperlink above), and will be issued both digitally and on a limited run of pink cassette tapes. The preorder also comes with a download of “WHYDIDUDIE.” The single is also available to stream on Soundcloud.
