Charleston Recess Series
Have you been hopelessly searching for the perfect day party? Because we’ve found it for you. Mixson Bath & Racquet Club will be launching its Charleston Recess Series on April 19. This glorified pool party for the 21 and over crowd aims to please with endless food, drink and entertainment options. Bogged down with final exam stress? Don’t worry, the series lasts throughout the summer, making for five events in total. Still not convinced? Two words: bottle service. Tickets are available online now.
Food Film Festival
Foodies are in luck; this multi-city event returns to Charleston from April 24-26. This three-day festival is the best of both worlds: screening food documentaries with accompanying eats (think fresh tacos, homemade doughnuts and the ever-enticing Ramen burger). The weekend kicks off with a celebration of BBQ on the U.S.S. Yorktown. For a detailed list of movies and munchies, check out their website: http://thefoodfilmfestival.com/
Jail Break Music and Arts Festival
Are you one of those daredevil individuals who likes going on Ghost Tours and breaking into abandoned buildings? Well, Jail Break is something for the rest of us. This year’s follies at the Old City Jail will feature “Optical Delusions,” a tribute to M.C. Esher and Lewis Carroll. Want an occasion to re-use your “Orange is the New Black” Halloween costume? Come to Jail Break on April 26 for a night of perception-altering exhibits and music. C’mon, an old jail can’t really be that haunted… Tickets are online for $15 in advance or $20 at the door.
5K Foam Festival
Do you like running and also bubble baths? If so, this is the race for you. This obstacle based race costs $80 to register, but that price includes money donated to A Child’s Hope Foundation, an organization dedicated to bridging the gap between orphaned children in developing countries and adoptive families in the States. For fitness and philanthropy nuts (Greek Life, I’m looking at you) register for this race and get foamy! Race Day is May 3, 2014, and will take place at Legare Farms on John’s Island.
First Flush FesTEAval
Looking for an excuse to embrace your inner tourist and visit the Charleston Tea Plantation? On May 24, the plantation will host the First Flush event to celebrate the beginning of the tealeaf harvest. The Avett Brothers along with a collection of local bands (Stoplight Observations, Tyler Boone Band, etc.) will provide entertainment beginning at 1 p.m., making this event a great value. Tickets are selling for $37.50 in advance, and $45 the day of.
Happy 38th Birthday, Spoleto! For those 38 years, you’ve brought music, art, theatre, and international attention to our city. According to the Spoleto website, Charleston was chosen to be the site of the sister Italian festival to the Festival of Two Worlds because Charleston is “intimate enough that the Festival would captivate the entire city, yet cosmopolitan enough to provide an enthusiastic audience and robust infrastructure.” Yeah, tell us something we don’t know. This year’s festival is from May 23-June 8. Tickets are sold per individual show online.
