On Oct. 22, the long awaited George Street Fitness Center opened its doors for the first time as President George Benson cut the ribbon at the grand opening ceremony.
“The issue was we needed a center like this, but the question was where would we put it? We struggled for years trying to figure out where we would put this facility,” Benson said.
Prior to the opening of the George Street fitness center, students were restricted to an area located in the Bellsouth building, the Johnson and Silcox recreation centers, and a small fitness facility in the Stern Center, all of which were considered too small for the 10,000 plus student population.
In the fall of 2012, McAlister Development broke ground on the Campus Center Apartments located between King Street and St. Philip Street. With plans to include a fitness center on the first floor, they provided the location for the new fitness center.
The 15,000-square-foot facility is located on the first floor of the Campus Center Apartments. It includes men and women’s locker rooms, 45 cardio machines, 28 weight machines, 24 weight benches and power racks, more than 10,00 pounds of weight plates, a dozen resistance machines, group exercise deck, and fitness classes such as Zumba and CougarFit.
The fitness center is open seven days a week: Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., Friday 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday noon to 11 p.m. Students must present their cougar ID to access the facility.
