The Student Government Association will host its annual George Street Bike Auction on Friday, Sept. 27 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. SGA will auction off between 50 to 100 bikes on George Street between Glebe and Coming.
SGA Community Outreach Committee Chairman Alan Lindsey, who is planning this year’s bike auction, is hoping to have a great turnout.
This year, the College’s Office of Sustainability will also have a presence at the auction. They are collaborating with Charleston Moves to teach students about biking and bike safety in the Lowcountry. In addition, they are collaborating with the local bike shops Affordabike and The Bicycle Shoppe Charleston/Mt. Pleasant to provide maintenance tips and help students get their bikes into working condition.
SGA acquires bikes for the auction from Public Safety, which collects lost bikes that were never reclaimed over the course of a year. Typically, each bike will range from between $50 to $150 depending on its model and condition.
Last year, SGA raised about $5,000, half of which was donated to Hurricane Sandy Relief. This year, Lindsey said, “We are hoping to raise over $5,000 and give at least half of the money to some charity or relief fund.”
The remainder of the money will go back to the school or the local community.
