Over the summer, Student Life redesigned the second floor of the Stern Student Center, adding new modular furniture, a new countertop space, bar stools and a television, all paid for by Student Life funds. They made modifications to the game room, as well, including up to date game systems and games along with smaller pool tables.
“The Stern Center was not being used to the maximum capacity of being a student center,” Associate Director for student life operations Mandi Bryson said.
The renovation has caused more students to use the area and take advantage of the Stern Center as a space for studying, holding meetings and hanging out. Student life is now looking to make further changes to the second floor, including the addition of a commuter’s lounge, which would feature microwaves and lockers for students commuting to the college from surrounding areas such as West Ashley, North Charleston and Mount Pleasant.
The fitness center could possibly be removed and utilized as a multipurpose space, but plans to remove it have not been finalized as the new George Street gym facility has not yet opened. Another idea under consideration is the creation of an art exhibit on the hallway leading to the game room that would showcase student artwork.
“We want to do what is best for the student body,” Bryson said.
