Diners craving hot dogs slathered with blue cheese slaw or sweet potato mustard can now blast off in West Ashley. Previously, Jack’s had its roots in a refurbished Folly Beach building and the original headquarters in Mt. Pleasant. “Demand for dogs” caused some expansion for the Jack’s name in the past year. The new location in West Ashley, situated in yuppie-friendly Avondale, is right on the heels of the 2010 Folly Beach’s “retro-fitting.”
For a menu featuring only hot dogs, the amount of choices and decisions is pretty spanning. The “Kypto Krout” is loaded with spicy mustard and sauerkraut. The “Planet Dog” features a Jamaican relish, but their signature Cosmic Dog is what got the press talking about hot dogs again. This take on the American classic, with “slaw” and a specialty mustard, got Alton Brown’s props on Food Network’s “The Best Thing I Ever Ate.” The sweet potato mustard is worth a trip off of the peninsula anytime.
Owner Jack Hurley has spread his own name and company all over Charleston on the back of food trucks and in supermarkets. His potato mustard sits alongside Anson grits and benne wafers on Charleston grocery displays. Josh Clayman, the manager at the West Ashley location, has been busily assembling the troops for Charleston’s connection to the cosmos. If the potato mustard and Boar’s Head hot dogs aren’t enough, the new location promises a peanut butter ‘n jelly milkshake. Your inner kid just got a new playground.
